How to sell to a new business in DC before it opens

If you sell to restaurants, shops, salons and local businesses, the best time to reach them is before the doors open: the owner is still choosing vendors. DC’s public records show who is getting ready, weeks or months ahead. Here is what to watch and what to say.

The records that show a business is coming

What this covers. New licenses at DC addresses, from all trades. We filter out rentals, salespeople and other non-storefronts, but some offices and home businesses remain. DC gives no forward date, so a license can arrive close to the first day of business.

Read the stage, then time the call

Each listing carries the stage its record is at. The later the stage, the sooner it opens.

Across all eight DC wards, that is 256 records in the 30 days to November 3, 2026. A record is a signal, not a promise: some open late, rename or never open.

What to say when you call

Where the address and phone come from

The state file usually names the business, the address and the licensee. Phone numbers appear only when the record publishes one. How a DC Basic Business License works walks through the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection file line by line.

Do it every week without the spreadsheet

We pull these records every day and sort them by ward and category. The free Monday email lists the week’s new names for one ward; Pro adds every street address, the licensee, phone where public and a CSV.
